I'm a little quirky and love hanging out near air-conditioning vents. I am extremely well-mannered, great indoors and am completely house-trained. Although I was trained by the famed Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan, and taught to respect my fellow canines, I really don't enjoy their company. That's why I need you!"

Dog friendly hiking

Runyan Canyon Loop

This was an odd hike in the heart of Hollywood, just a few blocks from the famous Grauman's Chinese Theater. The hike traverses through Runyan Canyon, whose former residents include John McCormick and Errol Flynn. The hike includes 3 great observation points with stunning views of Hollywood and the surrounding area. This park is an off-leash area for walking your dog, and it was rather amazing to watch the parade of docile dogs and slightly oddball owners traipsing along the trail. This place was busy on a weekday morning, so the weekends must be a zoo.

From the end of Fuller, follow the fire road about a half mile past to the first observation point. The trail at this point goes up some stairs and traverses a ridgeline to the second observation point. The trail continues upwards to another entrance gate, where you make a sharp turn to the final observation point. On the way down, stay to the right when you near the second observation point to make this hike a loop.

Trailhead: From the San Fernando Valley, head south on the Hollywood Freeway (101), and exit at Highland. Take Highland to Hollywood Blvd and turn right. A few blocks past the Graumans Chinese Theater, turn right on Fuller Avenue. Fuller dead ends into the park. You will need to find parking on the street. Want to help Ace of Hearts save lives? Foster a dog, save a life!

One of the best ways you can help Ace of Hearts is volunteering to foster a dog. For each new foster home that opens up, we are able to save the life of another shelter dog on death row. Opening your heart and home to a dog in need can bring you joy and the satisfaction that comes from knowing you've made a difference in an animal's life. Simply put, fostering saves lives!

You provide the love and attention; we provide everything else! We provide you with food, treats, a bed, and any veterinary care the dog may need. (You call us to arrange.)

Interested? Some things to consider:

*Most of the dogs we rescue are between 50 and 90 pounds, so you must be comfortable with large dogs.

* We ask that you are away from home no more than 7 hours a day.

*You will need to transport the dog to/from adoption events at the West Hollywood Petco two-three Saturdays per month. If you have to miss one OCCASIONALLY, we can arrange alternate transportation.

*We do ask that you have at least some experience with dogs, but you don’t need to have dogs of your own.

*You must be able to commit to fostering for a minimum of two weeks at a time.

*You must be communicative, letting us know what the dog needs as well as general information about the dog’s personality and temperament.

We are also in NEED of dog-savvy people who are able to help maintain and continue TRAINING of some of our foster dogs! Dog training experience is a PLUS, but not necessary!

Going to the shelters

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to write a quick post about going to your local animal shelters. My boyfriend and I have done this a few times looking for a dog, and it's actually where we rescued our cat last year. I know a lot of people are apprehensive about going, because it's sad and hard to look in all of their eyes, and I am no different. But it is well worth it to go there because so many are in need of homes because of backyard breeders and owner surrenders. Don't write off the shelters because they can be the place where you find your new companion! I know I will be continuing my search for a dog there, even though I do get sad that I cannot adopt them all, I know I can make a small step toward getting many more homes with this blog.

Love On 4 Paws Animal Assisted Therapy

Love On 4 Paws volunteer handler / animal teams are experienced in interacting with people who are ill, physically handicapped, developmentally delayed, or multi-handicapped. For these people, simple tasks or unexpected situations can become discouraging obstacles, sometimes preventing interaction with others. Animal assisted therapy visits counteract isolation and facilitate socialization, while helping build motor skills, cognitive skills, and self-confidence. As self-esteem increases, feelings of sadness, pain, and vulnerability decrease. It is amazing to watch the way therapy animals bring smiles and happiness to any environment. Suddenly hard work becomes more enjoyable, and challenges become less daunting.
Love on 4 Paws volunteer teams now serve several Los Angeles area hospitals, special schools, and assisted living facilities. There is no doubt that allowing therapy animals to visit these venues greatly enhances the patients’, students’, and residents’ quality of life.
